Sad News, The Death of Morgan Patterson

Dr. W. Morgan Patterson, former president (1980-81) and long-time member of the Baptist History & Heritage Society, died November 19 at his home in Novato, California, at age 85. He had been treated for pancreatic cancer. He was assistant professor of church history at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (1956-1959) and the director of graduate studies in the School of Theology and the David T. Porter Professor of Church History at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (1959-1976). He also served as dean of academic affairs at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (1976-1984). From 1984 to 1991 he was the 22nd president of Georgetown College. More recently, he was Scholar in Residence at Campbellsville University. Via Bruce Gourley.

If you don’t live in Tennessee and you aren’t a Baptist, you might not be familiar with his name. He’s the Editor of the Baptist and Reflector, our State Baptist paper.

He’s done a great job as Editor and he’s branching out and joining us here in the 21st century. It’s a brand spanking new blog, so check it out.

He also is doing the Twitter thing but of course given my feelings about that little bit of techno-sin you’ll have to follow him yourself without my company.

The First Volume of the New Supplement Series to the Journal

Church Discipline: P.H. Mell’s Manual and its Meaning has been published as the first volume of a new series of monographs in the Tennessee Baptist Historical Society Journal’s Supplement Series.

It was a lot of fun to do and if I may say, it’s a pretty interesting volume.

Bro. Harold Shoulders, former Director of Missions for the Cumberland Baptist Association, Clarksville, TN, was taken to Skyline Medical Center Friday night. Tests are being run, and we should know results soon. He is in Intensive Care Unit. Bro. Harold is a very spry 80+ year young man who still serves God stronger than most young people. Please pray for God’s will to be done, and for Harold’s wife, Joyce. as she ministers to him. He also has two sons who live away from Clarksville.
